It is a winter-season root crop and is grown all over India. It is used for human consumption as forage and particularly for feeding horses. It is taken raw and also used to prepare curries and is used for pickles and sweets. It is a rich source of carotene, a precursor of Vitamin A, and contains appreciable quantities of thiamin and riboflavin.
