Ridge Gourd or Ribbed Gourd (Lufa acutangula Roxb.) belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae. Ridge gourd can be grown throughout the year and are used vegetables. Ridge gourd or Ripped Gourd are creeper and has Climbing or Trailing habits. A wide range of variations in the shape, size, and length is found in its fruits.  It is a more popular vegetable in the south and east India.Lufta species have been originated in India

The warm and humid climate is favorable for its growth and development. The ideal temperature for Ridge Guard or Ripprd Gourd temperature is 25 to 35 Degree Celsius.

Ridge gourd can be grown in all kinds of soil. Loam, clay loam, and silt soils are best suited for their cultivation. The ideal pH for its cultivation is 6 to 6-75
The land is prepared by ploughing the same for three to four times, followed by planking 

Varieties of Ridge Gourd or Ripped Gourd;

There are some varieties of ridge gourd recommended for cultivation in our country:
Pusa Nasdar, Satputia, Yard Long, Desi Chaitali, Barsathi, Suryasakha, CO-1, CO-2, PKM-1, etc.

Sowing of Seed in  Ridge Gourd or Ripped Gourd Cultivation;

(a)Seed Treatment; seeds should be treated with Pseudomonas fluorescens 10 grams or Trichoderma viride 4 grams / kg of seeds.
(b) Sowing time. There are two types of ridge gourd commonly grown in our country and the seed is sown at different times according to the type of crop
Summer Crop: January to April Rainy 
Season Crop: June July 
(c) Seed rate. The seed rate is 250 to 500 gm per acre.
(d) Method of sowing. The seed is sown by dibbling method at a spacing of 120 cm (Row to row) x 90 cm (Plant to Plant). Two to three seeds are sown in each pit. 

Manuring in Ridge Gourd or Ripped Gourd Cultivation;

45 to 50 cartload well decomposed Farm Yard Manure should be given at the time of soil or field preparation. Apply a fertilizer dose of 250:100:100 kg NPK / ha throughout the Ridge gourd cropping period through the split application.

Intercultural Operations in Ridge Gourd or Ripped Gourd Cultivation;

To control the weeds in an early growth stage herbicidal spray of Paraquat @ 800 gms/acre is recommended Shallow cultivation should be given during the early stages of growth. The plants should be provided with suitable support, made of bamboo sticks.

Irrigation Ridge Gourd or Ripped Gourd Cultivation;

The summer crop should be irrigated just after sowing and subsequent irrigations are given at four to five days interval. No irrigation is given in rainy season crop

Harvesting of Ridge Gourd or Ripped Gourd;

The fruits become ready for harvest from 55-60 days of sowing. The Tull grown tender fruits should be harvested at weekly intervals by cutting them with a knife. 

Yield;

The yield is about 20 to 30 Q per acre.
